BBS – ADAPTIVE CONSERVATION PLANNING

The Brown Bag Lunch Seminar returns with a new discussion on “Adaptive Conservation Planning”, exploring how spatial information and future scenarios can support more efficient and strategic conservation decisions, especially in contexts where financial resources and areas available for conservation are limited.

This session will be presented by Maite Leite Montalvão.

Adaptive Conservation Planning is an approach to environmental planning that recognizes the dynamic nature of ecosystems and the uncertainty associated with future environmental and socioeconomic changes. It combines spatial analysis, ecological information, scenario development, and continuous monitoring to identify conservation priorities and guide effective management actions. Rather than treating conservation decisions as fixed solutions, adaptive planning promotes a cycle of planning, implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment, allowing strategies to evolve as new information becomes available.

This approach is particularly relevant for addressing challenges such as climate change, habitat loss, landscape fragmentation, and increasing pressure on natural resources. During the seminar, we will discuss how spatial information and future scenarios can help identify priority areas and support more effective conservation strategies.
